A Taiwanese company, Taiwan Gold Apollo, has denied responsibility for a series of explosive pagers that detonated in Lebanon, claiming the devices were manufactured by a European distributor.
According to Reuters, Xu Qingguang, chairman of Taiwan Gold Apollo, stated that the pager that exploded was not produced by his company, despite bearing their brand name.
Chairman Xu explained that the explosive pager was produced by a European distributor who had obtained the right to use the Taiwan Gold Apollo brand. He added that the distributor had entered into a business agreement with the company approximately three years ago.
Taiwan Gold Apollo emphasized that they are a responsible company and claimed to be victims of this incident.
Earlier reports by the New York Times, citing US officials, suggested that Hezbollah had ordered pagers from Taiwan’s Gold Apollo, which were then tampered with to include explosive materials before arriving in Lebanon, resulting in a series of explosions.
On the 17th local time, hundreds of launchers carried by Hezbollah members exploded simultaneously across Lebanon and Syria, resulting in at least 9 fatalities and nearly 3,000 injuries.
