Exposing the “Organic” Fruit and Vegetable Scam in Europe

Investigations reveal that thousands of tonnes of non-organic produce were sold as “organic” in major grocery store chains across Europe.

In a shocking discovery, Spanish police busted a mafia network that forged documents for supposedly “green” products, despite not meeting any organic criteria. The seized produce was intended for distribution throughout Europe.

The “Fruit Mafia” Scandal: Falsely Labeled Organic Produce

According to The Olive Press, the scammers took advantage of the higher prices of organic fruit and vegetables that customers were willing to pay. The group, operating in Motril, Granada, sold over two million kilograms of inorganic products falsely labeled as “organic” in just six months.

The profits from this fraud were shared among the network members, including the company owner and assistants. The operation, dubbed “Obstteller”, revealed that the group sold conventional products, often from unregistered land, in major European markets.

How to Identify Genuine Organic Produce

Alexandru Cîrîc, Director of the National Food Research Institute, explained:

“Differentiating between organic and conventional fruit and vegetables is challenging. Even at laboratory level, it’s difficult to identify. The best way to ensure authenticity is for authorities to trace the products’ origin and verify if they meet organic farming criteria.”
