Extreme Cold and Snow Alert for Millions in the U.S.

Extreme Cold and Snow in the United States

The National Weather Service of the United States warns of snow and dangerously low temperatures. Expected temperatures may range from 15 to 30 degrees Celsius below zero.

Arctic Air Invades the U.S.

This year’s first Arctic outbreak has caused a significant drop in temperatures across the eastern half of the United States, especially affecting the northern plains and Upper Midwest. This event has resulted in wind chills ranging from 15 to 30 degrees below zero. Authorities warn that such conditions can lead to hypothermia and frostbite if people are exposed for too long without proper protection.

National Impact of the Arctic Front

After the winter storm during Thanksgiving, an Arctic front from Canada has pushed cold air toward the southeast of the country. On Black Friday, over 230 million Americans felt below-average temperatures, a trend that will persist into the work week. According to the NOAA, the coldest temperatures may hit between Sunday and Monday, with records below -10°F in the north and wind chills reaching -20°F or lower. In the Midwest, thermometers may drop to around 10°F, marking the beginning of the frost season in some areas. This extreme weather pattern will continue as a strong Arctic front crosses the region on Monday and Tuesday, accompanied by high winds.

Long-lasting Snow Threat

The combination of Arctic air and the Great Lakes, currently at record temperatures, has triggered a prolonged lake-effect snowstorm. This phenomenon began on Friday and is expected to last into the next week, with significant snowfall from Michigan to New York. Over 2.4 million people are under lake-effect snow warnings, particularly in western New York, northwest Pennsylvania, and northeast Ohio. Cities like Buffalo may experience continuous snowfall for days, severely impacting travel on major highways like Interstate 90 and 81.

Recommendations for Coping with Extreme Cold

Authorities advise residents in affected areas to take preventive measures. It’s essential to prepare winter emergency kits for vehicles, especially for those traveling in rural or mountainous areas. Limiting outdoor activities, adequately covering skin, and staying updated on local weather advisories are also recommended. This Arctic outbreak, one of the first this season, highlights the need for readiness against severe winter conditions still to come.
