India faces rising Deaths Due to Extreme Temperatures
A new study indicates that India is experiencing an alarming increase in deaths related to extreme temperatures. Over the past two decades, heatstroke has claimed 20,000 lives, while cold exposure contributed to another 15,000 fatalities, according to research published in the journal Temperature.
The study, led by Professor Pradeep Guin at O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) in Sonipat, highlights a notable upward trend in mortality from both heatstroke and cold exposure across various Indian states. The research emphasizes the need for urgent action to mitigate the impact of these extreme weather events.
The analysis of data from 2001 to 2019 reveals that men of working age are notably vulnerable to heatstroke. Researchers found that male deaths were three to five times higher than female deaths due to heatstroke, and four to seven times higher due to cold exposure.
