Extreme weather failing to encourage political climate action, says activist Luisa Neubauer | Climate crisis

Extreme weather failing to encourage political climate action, says activist Luisa Neubauer | Climate crisis

January 24, 2025 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Business

Title: Climate Crisis: Activist’s Warning as Disinfo Rages, Elections Loom

In a stark departure from expectations, Luisa Neubauer, Germany’s most recognizable climate activist, has sounded the alarm over the lack of political momentum despite escalating extreme weather events. Speaking openly about the shift she’s witnessed, the 28-year-old activist from Fridays for Future Germany expressed dismay at the inconsistent political response to climate disasters.

"I Once believed that major catastrophes would pressure politics into action," Neubauer admitted. "Yet, I’m witnessing the opposite – extreme weather incidents are being co-opted by those who deny climate disasters, fueling disinformation and conspiracy theories."

Neubauer, who spent three months in the U.S. before the presidential election, was taken aback by how the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene was exploited by far-right influencers and climate science deniers. Similar scenes unfurled after California’s recent wildfires and Spain’s deadly floods in Valencia.

Adding to this bleak picture, a U.S.-based thinktank known for pushing climate science denial has been quietly working with right-wing European politicians to undermine efforts to protect nature and transition away from fossil fuels.

Elon Musk, the high-profile green tech billionaire, has become a symbol of this shift. His vocal support for far-right figures and debunked conspiracy theories has sent shockwaves through the climate community. Musk’s celebration of Trump’s neo-Nazi supporters at the latter’s recent inauguration underscores the gravity of the situation.

"Our climate struggle is no longer just about green technologies. It’s about defending democracy and truth," Neubauer stressed. "Without a shared reality, we cannot collectively address the climate crisis."

Reflecting on her journey, Neubauer said she used to believe it didn’t matter why people wanted to save the planet, only that they did. But Musk’s actions – "a very extreme example" of green capitalism – opened her eyes to the dangers of this mindset. She now understands that engineering solutions alone cannot overcome the challenge of climate change.

With falling sales of heat pumps and electric cars in Germany, and disinformation campaigns against them gaining traction, Neubauer argues that climate activism must broaden its focus. "We can’t just talk emissions," she asserted. "We must stand up for democracy and truth."

Far-right networks worldwide are increasingly coordinating to block climate action. In Germany, where elections are just weeks away, the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party is polling strongly. Musk has endorsed AfD and hosted a party leader who falsely claimed Hitler was a communist.

Despite pre-2021 election promises to keep global warming below 1.5°C, public interest in pollution cuts has waned in Germany. Policies like phasing out gas boilers have sparked backlash, with some voters seemingly more concerned about perceived eco-dictatorship than climate crisis.

Neubauer blames politicians across the spectrum for polluting the climate discourse and normalizing hateful rhetoric against activists. She fears that Germany, with its faltering climate policy traction, is an increasingly common tale in liberal democracies worldwide.
