The single-seat aircraft was conducting a routine afternoon training flight near Traverse City at the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center, a Michigan Air National Guard facility in the northern part of the state, according to a statement released by the 149th Fighter Wing. The jet is permanently based at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas and was participating in an exercise designated as Operation Northern Cactus, an initiative designed to prepare units for deployment to austere environments.

Pilot Condition and Evacuation After Michigan Crash

Following the ejection, emergency responders transported the pilot to a local hospital for medical evaluation. According to a social media statement from the Michigan State Police, the pilot is listed in stable condition, and authorities have confirmed there are no other known injuries related to the accident. Aerial imagery shared on social media platforms captured a large plume of black smoke rising from the impact site. In response to the crash, the Michigan State Police ordered the evacuation of all buildings within a one-mile radius of the wreckage due to concerns over a hazardous chemical spill.

Bird Strike Reports and Hydrazine Hazard

Audio recordings obtained from the aviation monitoring website LiveATC indicate that the crashed jet’s wingman radioed air traffic control to report that the aircraft may have suffered a bird strike. The audio reveals that the pilot communicated plans to bail out of the fighter before ultimately executing an ejection while flying as part of the BUCK 11 flight formation. The evacuation perimeter was established primarily because F-16 fighter jets carry hydrazine, a highly toxic chemical compound used to fuel the aircraft’s emergency power unit. The system provides critical power to the jet’s flight controls and other essential electronics in the event of a primary engine failure. The 149th Fighter Wing announced that an official investigation into the exact cause of the crash is currently underway.
