For over two decades, the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor has held the title of the world’s most expensive fighter jet, maintaining its performance edge despite its considerable cost. As of December 2025, the price of a single F-22 ranges from $143 million to $334 million, depending on how costs are calculated.
The United States Air Force typically cites a “bare” aircraft price of $143 million. though, when research and development (R&D) expenses and overall program costs are factored in,the total cost per aircraft exceeds $330 million, according to aviation analysis from Simple Flying.
A pioneer of Fifth-Generation Air Combat
The F-22 is widely recognized as the first fifth-generation fighter jet to enter full operational service. It revolutionized air superiority tactics with its combination of stealth technology, supersonic cruise capability (supercruise), and exceptional maneuverability.
Limited Production, Elevated Costs
A primary driver of the F-22’s astronomical price tag is the relatively small production run. Initial plans called for 750 aircraft, but with the downsizing of the U.S. military following the end of the Cold War, only fewer than 250 F-22s were ultimately built. This reduced scale of production significantly increased the per-unit cost, as fixed expenses were spread across a smaller number of planes.
Export Restrictions Maintain Technological Advantage
The F-22 has never been sold to any country othre than the United States.U.S. law explicitly prohibits the export of this aircraft, a measure designed to protect its advanced technological secrets. While limiting potential revenue from international sales, this restriction has helped safeguard the Raptor’s unique capabilities.
