Formula 2 made its North American debut at the Miami International Autodrome during the Miami Grand Prix weekend, concluding on May 3, 2026. The event marked a significant shift in the championship calendar, with the Miami round replacing the traditional April races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
The weekend was highlighted by a series of competitive sessions, including the Sprint Race on May 2, 2026, and the Feature Race on May 3, 2026. The Sprint Race concluded with a closely contested three-car battle on the final lap, resulting in a victory for championship leader Nikola Tsolov.
Tsolov Extends Championship Lead
Nikola Tsolov, a Red Bull junior, secured the win in Miami’s first-ever Formula 2 Sprint Race. Tsolov started from pole position alongside Laurens van Hoepen, maintaining a duel with the Trident driver throughout the event. Tsolov ultimately overtook van Hoepen at the final corner to claim the victory.
The result marks Tsolov’s second successive victory of the season, following his Feature Race win at the opening round in Melbourne. This performance has allowed the Bulgarian driver to extend his lead in the championship standings.
Tsolov’s victory came after a challenging start to the weekend. During the Free Practice session on May 1, 2026, Tsolov and his Campos Racing teammate, Mari Boya, both retired early due to technical issues. Tsolov failed to complete a single lap in practice and qualified 10th for the Feature Race, which placed him on pole for the shorter Sprint Race due to the reverse-grid format.
Qualifying and Sprint Drama
The qualifying session on May 1, 2026, saw Kush Maini secure his first-ever Formula 2 pole position. Maini was joined in the top three by Rafael Câmara in second and Martinius Stenshorne in third.

However, Maini’s weekend faced a significant setback prior to the Sprint Race. The ART Grand Prix driver was unable to start his car for the formation lap, forcing him to miss the start of the race.
The Sprint Race grid also featured Ollie Goethe and Joshua Dürksen on the second row, following the reverse-grid application from the Friday qualifying results.
Miami International Autodrome Context
The Miami International Autodrome, which has hosted Formula 1 since 2022, served as the venue for this unprecedented F2 appearance. The circuit length is 5.412 kilometers, with the Sprint Race consisting of 23 laps (124.476 kilometers) and the Feature Race spanning 32 laps (173.184 kilometers).
The introduction of the Miami round represents a strategic change to the 2026 FIA Formula 2 season, bringing the feeder series to a North American audience for the first time in its history.
