Sergio Perez’s Father Rushed to Hospital After Crash at Azerbaijan F1 GP

Antonio Perez Garibay, father of Sergio Perez, was admitted to hospital immediately after the Azerbaijan F1 Grand Prix.

Sergio Perez’s father suffered a pre-infarction, a precursor to a heart attack, shortly after crashing on the final lap of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, and is believed to be in a state of emergency.

The incident occurred in Mexico City, where Pérez Garibay, a prominent local politician, was rushed to hospital shortly after his son and Carlos Sainz collided during a podium battle in Baku on the morning of September 15.

His spokesperson told PlanetF1.com that he was “rushed to hospital yesterday morning complaining of pre-heart attack symptoms.”

“This accident happened after my son collided with Carlos Sainz at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.”

Pérez Garibay was found unconscious in the bathroom of his home in Mexico City, where paramedics immediately provided him with medical attention. He was rushed to a hospital in the capital and remains under medical observation. However, his condition is stable.

A statement released by Perez Garibay’s team, Scuderia Perez, to PlanetF1.com on the morning of September 17 has been updated as follows:

“Perez Garibay is stable but under constant medical monitoring in the intensive care unit, with attention focused primarily on his heart and other vital organs. His condition continues to be closely monitored.”

“On behalf of Antonio Pérez Garibay and the entire team, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Mexican Red Cross for their rapid response. I would also like to express my gratitude and respect to all the medical personnel.”

“Thank you very much for your support and solidarity. Best regards, Antonio Pérez Garibay Team.”

Perez Garibay remains hospitalized, and Mexican media Medio Tiempo quoted the 65-year-old as saying:

“It all happened after the accident. The shock of the accident could have been the cause.”

“Cardiac tests have already been done to find out why I fainted.”

Pérez Garibay has been active on social media since Mexican media reported his hospitalization, sharing images of his son with the caption “Viva México” and celebrating Independence Day. Photos of the ceremony have also been released.

Meanwhile, Perez is in Singapore ahead of this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix, but the Mexican driver has yet to publicly comment on the matter.

Perez Garibay has become a fan favorite over the years, enthusiastically attending his son’s races in Mexico City every year and often celebrating with the drivers after a Grand Prix.
