F1 Sprint Races to Rise to 10 by 2027
## F1 Considering Weekend Format Changes, Shorter Races to Attract Younger Fans
Formula 1 is exploring important changes to its race weekend format and race lengths, aiming to attract a younger demographic while preserving the sport’s heritage. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali believes a move towards a consistent weekend structure is inevitable, though he cautions against adopting the sprint race format used in MotoGP at every round, deeming it “too big a step.” He envisions a “maturation process that respects a more traditionalist approach.”
Domenicali has also floated the ideas of reverse grid races and shorter grand prix distances. While these suggestions aren’t currently firm plans from formula One Management (FOM) and its owner, Liberty Media, they have sparked debate about a potential radical shake-up.
Bobby Epstein, Chairman of the Circuit of the Americas (COTA), expressed confidence in Domenicali’s leadership, stating he believes any changes woudl be made wiht the best interests of the sport in mind. “I think Stefano would only do that if he thought it was in the best interest of the sport,” Epstein said.
He further elaborated on Domenicali’s ability to balance evolution with tradition: “Part of what makes Stefano such a brilliant leader is his ability to help F1 evolve and remain relevant without sacrificing the sport’s rich heritage and tradition. So, it’s a tough balance, but he does it with passion and without sacrificing the interests of either the fans, the teams, or the competitors.”
Epstein affirmed COTA’s support for whatever direction F1 ultimately takes, focusing on continuing to deliver a strong fan experience while allowing Domenicali to guide the sport’s future.”We’ll keep focusing on providing a great fan experience and let Stefano decide what’s best for the sport itself. I’ve got full confidence in him.”
