Face-Off in the Booth: Ryan Johnston Lands ‘Dream Job’ as New Voice of the Bruins on 98.5 Sports Hub
Ryan Johnston Named Bruins Game Announcer for 98.5 The Sports Hub
Ryan Johnston, a familiar voice in New England hockey, has been named the Bruins game announcer for 98.5 The Sports Hub. Johnston replaces Jude Sirot, who left his radio job in August to take a job as a host at NESN.
Johnston has been a familiar face to listeners since 2010, when he served as the Play-by-Play host on the Bruins 98.5 Radio Network. He will now join commentator Bob Beers on a permanent basis, bringing his extensive play-by-play experience in New England hockey to the role.
“This is truly my dream job and I am thrilled to have this opportunity,” Johnston said in a statement. “I appreciate the trust the 98.5 The Sports Hub management team and the Bruins organization have placed in me. I am fortunate to work with Bob Beers, one of the NHL’s most accomplished analysts. I look forward to the season and providing our listeners with the quality broadcasts they have come to expect.”
A graduate of Syracuse University, Johnston has broadcast Boston College hockey games for Sports Hub for two seasons, as well as the Beanpot Tournament and Hockey East Tournament for the station. He also served as spokesman for the AHL’s Lowell Rock Monsters and Lowell Devils franchises for nine seasons prior to the trade.
Program director Rick Razik praised the new pairing, saying, “Ryan and Bob will be a great pairing. They are well known to listeners and hockey fans in the area. They have hosted several Bruins games, Beanpot tournaments together over the years, and co-hosted the Saturday Hockey Show. We can’t wait for them to get started.”
Bruins fans also know Johnston from the “Sports Hub Hockey Show,” which he has hosted every Saturday morning since 2012. He also regularly hosts the “Toucher & Hardy” morning show on 98.5.
Bruins President Cam Neeley welcomed Johnston to the role, saying, “We are thrilled to welcome Ryan as the Bruins’ new radio personality. Ryan comes to this role with a deep familiarity and knowledge of the Boston Bruins team, fans and organization, and we are confident he will bring a fresh perspective to the broadcast.”
Johnston will become the 10th person to call a Bruins hockey game on radio since 1924, a testament to his hard work and dedication to the sport.
Johnston’s promotion has been met with praise from his colleagues, with Fred Tutcher calling it “a really, really great story” and praising Johnston’s resilience and determination.
