Six third-year students in the elementary education course, who are about to begin their teaching practice in October, and two students in the basic course, participated in supporting the “Night School” held at Kitanagoya Municipal Shikachi Kita Elementary School, located near the university. Shikachi Kita Elementary School has been helping us with class observations and school support activities in the past.

The “Night School” was planned mainly by the parents and children of graduates and local residents, and is carried out with the cooperation of teachers, parents, and students. We gathered at the school at 17:30, welcomed the elementary school students and their parents, and the “Campfire” began at 18:00. The art students were in charge of two games, “Let’s go wild animal hunting” and “Bomb game”, which both parents and children enjoyed.

Next, from 7:00 p.m., we were in charge of two “test of courage” locations in the pitch-black school building. The students had been decorating classrooms with scary scenes since noon that day, and guided groups of about six people through them one after another. At the same time, a sudden thunderstorm occurred outside, which made the experience even more realistic, to the point that some children started crying.

Although it was outside of school hours, students aiming to become elementary school teachers participated in the event with the aim of improving their teaching skills before their teaching practice and gaining experience in creating an event in cooperation with local residents. Although the activity lasted a long time, the students received thanks from parents and children, the school, and local people, and returned home feeling very rewarded.
