Table of Contents
A federal investigation into Hunter Biden, son of President Joe biden, has resulted in a conviction on gun charges and continues to face legal challenges. The case centers on a 2018 purchase of a revolver and alleged false statements made on the required federal form.
The Verdict and Charges
on June 5, 2024, a Delaware jury found Hunter Biden guilty on three felony counts: making a false statement in the purchase of a firearm, concealing his drug use from a firearms dealer, and illegally possessing a firearm while being an unlawful user of or addicted to a controlled substance. NBC News reported the verdict.
The Firearm Purchase and Form 4473
prosecutors argued that Biden falsely checked “no” on Form 4473, the standard form required for firearm purchases, when asked if he was an unlawful user of or addicted to a controlled substance. They presented evidence, including Biden’s own memoir, detailing his struggles with crack cocaine during the time of the purchase. The Department of Justice stated that completing the form falsely is a federal offense.
Potential Sentencing and Maximum Penalties
Each felony count carries a maximum sentance of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Though, legal experts anticipate a considerably lighter sentence, particularly given Biden’s lack of prior criminal record. Sentencing is scheduled for July 3, 2024, before U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika.
