Former Coordinating Minister for Political,Legal, and Security Affairs,Mahfud MD,has stated that the authority to determine the authenticity of President Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi) diploma rests solely with the court judge presiding over the case involving Roy Suryo and others. This follows the naming of Roy Suryo and associates as suspects in a case alleging a forged diploma.
Mahfud MD conveyed his opinion through the ‘Teruhan Terang’ podcast, available on his official YouTube channel @MahfudMD. He argued that a guilty verdict for Roy Suryo Cs should not be issued before definitively establishing whether Jokowi’s diploma is genuine or fabricated.
“if Roy Suryo is suddenly declared guilty in court, despite the core issue being a false accusation, it must be proven first. And the entity responsible for proving the diploma’s authenticity - whether it’s fake or not - is not the police, but the judge,” Mahfud stated, as reported on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.
Background: The Diploma Allegation
The case centers around allegations that President jokowi’s diploma is a forgery. Roy Suryo, a political analyst and former Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, has been a vocal critic regarding the diploma’s validity. The Indonesian national Police initiated an investigation following complaints regarding the alleged falsification.
Mahfud MD’s Legal Reasoning
Mahfud MD, a respected legal scholar and former Constitutional court Justice, emphasized the importance of due process and the separation of powers. He argued that the police’s role is to investigate and gather evidence, while the determination of facts and legal conclusions is the exclusive domain of the judiciary. Prematurely declaring guilt, he suggested, woudl undermine the principles of a fair trial.
Implications for the Case
Mahfud MD’s statement adds a significant layer of legal scrutiny to the case. It suggests that the prosecution will face a considerable challenge in securing a conviction against Roy Suryo Cs without first presenting conclusive evidence of diploma forgery to the court. The focus, according to Mahfud, should be on establishing the diploma’s authenticity, rather than solely on the act of making accusations.
