Innovative Research in Colloid and Bioogue Areas
Taybeh Saghaei, a researcher at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (Boku), secured first place at the Falling Walls Lab Vienna competition with her pitch, “Breaking the Wall of Single Cell Diagnostics.” The competition, held earlier this month, recognizes innovative research ideas from students and researchers across all disciplines. Saghaei’s work focuses on advancing diagnostics at the single-cell level.

Saghaei’s Research at Boku
At Boku, Saghaei’s research centers on developing new methods for characterizing and producing complex material and biological systems at the micro and nano scales. Her work encompasses two primary areas: self-organizing particle systems that mimic the 3D structures of proteins, and innovative techniques for analyzing individual cells based on their biophysical properties. The overarching goal is to translate fundamental principles of nature into practical applications within material science, biomedicine, and biotechnology.
Falling Walls Lab: A Platform for Young Researchers
Falling Walls Lab is an international pitch competition designed to provide a platform for students and researchers to present their groundbreaking ideas to a broad audience and a panel of experts. Participants deliver three-minute pitches outlining their research. The Vienna event is organized by a consortium of Austrian organizations including the Austrian Cooperative Research (ACR), the Christian Doppler Research Society, the Complexity Science Hub, Fraunhofer Austria, the Austrian University of Applied Sciences Conference (FHK), the Ludwig Boltzmann Society, and Xista.
The 2024 Vienna jury also included Freyja-Maria smoll-Jüttner,Iris Filzwieser,Johann Kastner,Markus Wanko,Peter Prenninger,and Sandra Stein.
Next Steps: Technology Talk and International Finale
Saghaei recently presented her project again at the Technology talk – Austria’s leading technology conference – on September 12, 2024. She will further represent Austria at the International Falling Walls Lab Finale in berlin this November. The International Finale brings together winners from Falling Walls labs around the world.
About Single-Cell diagnostics
Single-cell diagnostics is a rapidly evolving field that aims to analyze the characteristics of individual cells within a population. this approach offers a much more detailed understanding of biological processes than customary methods that analyze bulk samples. It has the potential to revolutionize disease diagnosis, personalized medicine, and drug finding. Key challenges in single-cell diagnostics include developing methods for isolating and analyzing individual cells, and interpreting the vast amounts of data generated.
