Richard Dawson, the original host of the iconic game show Family Feud, not only charmed audiences but also found love on set.The show, created by Mark Goodson, premiered in 1976 and quickly became a TV game show sensation with its fast-paced format where two families compete to guess the most popular answers to survey questions. The winning family then progresses to the “Fast Money” round for a chance at a grand prize.
Dawson’s charisma was a key ingredient in the show’s early success. While Family Feud has seen format tweaks and host changes over the years, the core concept and appeal of watching family dynamics remain. However, Dawson’s personal life took an unexpected turn when he met his second wife, Gretchen Johnson, on the show.
Before finding love on Family feud, Dawson was married to actress Diana Dors from 1959 to 1967, with whom he had two sons. In May 1981, Gretchen Johnson, then 24, appeared as a contestant. The chemistry between her and Dawson was undeniable. Known for his signature kisses to female contestants, Dawson shared a especially memorable kiss with Johnson.
Johnson recalled the kiss in an interview with PEOPLE, describing Dawson as “extremely sweet.” Her family won $12,659 that day. Dawson invited Johnson to a home-cooked meal, and they soon began dating. They moved in together, and in 1990, their daughter, Shannon Dawson, was born. The couple married a year later.
