Family Fun in New York City

Family Fun in New York City

January 22, 2025 Catherine Williams News

Title: Falling for the Big Apple: A Family’s New York Love Affair

In the heart of New York City, our family’s love affair with the Big Apple began the moment we stepped off the plane. "Welcome to New York," the city seemed to say, as a woman danced to music only she could hear, her iPhone propped up on her Citi Bike basket. It was a scene that captured the city’s bonkers, brilliant energy.

Peterson Schaffer once said, "If London is a watercolour, New York is an oil painting." He’s right. London is charming and understated; New York, bolder and brasher. It’s the city that doesn’t clean up its act, but wears its heart on its sleeve.

Staying in Style: Marriott Marquis

For our family, staying big was the only way to go. The Marriott Marquis, a giant among hotels, sits proudly on Times Square, the city’s bustling crossroads. With 1,971 rooms and jaw-dropping views, it’s a mini metropolis in its own right.

From the glass-walled elevators that shoot you up a 52-storey central plinth, to the breathtaking views from your bedroom, every detail oozes New York charm. The Broadway Lounge serves up excellent American bistro food, and the помогает планировать. M Club offers a calm respite with complimentary drinks and snacks. And the French toast for breakfast? Let’s just say it’s worth the trip alone.

Showtime: Empire State Building

Our first stop was the Empire State Building. Gone are the notorious queues – now, timed arrivals and new exhibits ensure a smooth experience. The interactive museum on the second floor is a fascinating dive into the building’s history. But the cherry on top? The new 102nd floor observation point, offering 360-degree views that’ll make your heart soar.

Colours and Contrails

For our daughter, Mia, the Color Factory was a dream come true. An interactive museum dedicated to colour? Yes, please. From tasting colours to spinning hues, she was in her element. And the sliding pool of cotton-candy blue balls? Well, that was just the cherry on top of an already sweet experience.

Our son, James, had his moment at the Intrepid Museum. With an F-14 Tomcat and a flight simulator that’ll turn your stomach, it was a Top Gun fan’s dream. (And yes, we recited "Talk to me, Goose" more times than we can count.)

Feasting on Flavours

No New York trip would be complete without indulging in the city’s diverse food scene. For Mia, Ellen’s Stardust Diner was a Broadway dream – watching aspiring stars sing show tunes while she devoured pancakes and a milkshake. James, however, had Roberta’s on the tip of his tongue. Its wood-fired pizza and signature bread were enough to make his taste buds dance.

For us, The Dead Rabbit was a revelation. Part Irish pub, part world-class cocktail bar, it’s a not-so-secret gem in the Financial District. The bespoke cocktails are unforgettable, as is the buzzing, lively atmosphere.

A Week of Optimism

New York is many things, but boring isn’t one of them. It’s dirty, but it’s covered in good dirt. It’s not perfect, but it’s a magnet for ambitious people – and their families. From its naked ambition to its relentless, kinetic energy, New York is the place to go when you want a boost of optimism.

So, if you’re wondering how to kickstart your kids’ love affair with New York City, our advice is simple: go big. Because this city will encourage, nurture, and reward even a shred of optimism. Or at the very least, make you feel alive.

Our New York adventure, fueled by the city’s vibrant energy and housed in the grandeur of the Marriott Marquis, was nothing short of unforgettable. From the iconic skyline views to the bustling streets teeming with life, New York captivated our hearts. Just like Peterson Schaffer described, it’s a city that wears its heart on its sleeve, bold, brash, and undeniably brilliant. While London may be charming, New York’s raw energy and undeniable allure leave an imprint that lingers long after the plane takes off. Our family’s love affair with the Big Apple has onyl just begun.
New York city is a symphony of sights, sounds, and experiences, and our family found ourselves swept up in its rhythm. From the whirlwind energy of Times Square to the breathtaking panoramas from the Empire State Building, every moment felt both exhilarating and unforgettable. The Marriott Marquis became our home away from home, offering a haven of comfort and luxury amidst the city’s frenetic pace.

As we boarded the plane back home, a bittersweet feeling settled in. We were leaving behind the glittering cityscape, the pulsating heartbeat of endless possibilities, and the warm embrace of family-amiable spaces like the Centurions. But New York City, with its vibrant spirit and unyielding charm, had woven its magic into us, leaving us yearning to return and discover more of its hidden treasures.
