A New Generation of Winslows
For fans of the beloved 90s sitcom “Family Matters,” a return to the Winslow household may be on the horizon – but with a twist. Actor Bryton James, best known for his role as Richie Crawford, is spearheading an effort to revive the series as an animated show, according to recent reports. James envisions a reimagining of the classic episodes, modernized for a new audience.
“I had an idea to take the show and turn it into an animated series,” James explained. “taking the old episodes and modernizing them and kind of starting from scratch for the new generation.” He’s already made significant progress, securing a production company and assembling key personnel for the project.
Urkel’s return – With a Catch
Perhaps the most iconic character from “Family Matters” is Steve Urkel, brilliantly portrayed by Jaleel White. While White initially declined a previous reboot proposal, he is now involved in the animated series plan.James clarified that White’s participation wouldn’t necessarily require him to physically reprise the role, offering flexibility in bringing the character back to the screen.
“Jaleel wouldn’t have to put the outfit on either, and we could still deliver what the show did for the audience and for families, especially, and revamp it for the new generation,” James stated.
A Family Still Connected
The spirit of “Family Matters” extends beyond the screen, as James maintains close relationships with many of his former co-stars.He regularly connects with Telma Hopkins (Carl Winslow’s wife, Harriette), darius McCrary (Eddie Winslow), and Kellie Shanygne Williams (Laura Winslow). Recent gatherings, like Hopkins’ birthday festivity, have allowed the cast to reconnect and reminisce.
“I still vrey much keep in touch with Telma Hopkins… Darius McCrary… I just saw Kellie Shanygne williams,” James shared. “Jaleel, I’ve kept in touch with him off and on, a great mentor at this point in my life.”
