The Housing Crisis in Ireland
Tom Mahoney and his wife, Jasmina, experienced firsthand the severe housing challenges facing ireland. For nearly a decade, they lived in a self-built cabin in Tom’s mother’s garden in Ballymun, Dublin, while struggling to save for a deposit on a home. Ireland’s housing crisis has been escalating for years, driven by factors like limited supply, rising rents, and increased demand[
RTE News].
“The struggle that we had started eight or nine years ago when the rents started to rise so we decided to build a cabin in my mother’s back garden, with the intention to be there only a year or two to save for a deposit for a house,” Tom,a social worker, explained. Despite thier efforts, the situation persisted.
“When we went to bid on houses, we kept getting outpriced and eight years later we were still there with no hope in sight of having a home for our little family,” he added.
A Challenging Living Situation
The Mahoneys’ living arrangement, while a temporary solution, became increasingly unsustainable as their family grew. They welcomed their son, Hunter, and the limitations of the cabin became more apparent. The lack of adequate space and facilities impacted their quality of life.
“We were all in one room,” Jasmina recalled, highlighting the cramped conditions. The family’s story underscores the difficult choices many Irish families face when confronted with unaffordable housing options.

Tom says his family are living their dream in their new home.
Emigration as a Consideration
Faced with a seemingly endless wait for affordable housing, the Mahoneys began to consider emigration as a viable option for their family’s future. They initiated the process, incurring expenses to assess Tom’s qualifications for work abroad.
“We got the ball rolling for that, spent a lot of money and got my qualifications assessed over there,” tom explained. This demonstrates the lengths to which families will go to secure a better life.
A Fortuitous Turn of Events
just as they were preparing to move abroad, the Mahoneys received unexpected good news. They were selected as applicants for a new build development by Tuath Housing in Balbriggan.
“Then we woke up one morning and we got an email from Tuath [Housing] to say we were chosen applicants for this new build in Balbriggan,” tom said. “We were over the moon, there were lots of tears of joy,” he added, describing their relief and happiness.
Jasmina expressed her gratitude for finally having a home with basic amenities. “We were all in one room,” she said, recalling the previous living situation, and now they have a bathroom and shower.
