Florida A&M Athletic director Arrested on Fraud Charges
Updated June 10, 2025
Angela Suggs, the athletic director for Florida A&M University (FAMU), was arrested Monday on charges of fraud and
theft. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) reported that the charges stem from SuggsS time as CEO of
the Florida Sports Foundation. The investigation revealed that Suggs allegedly used a corporate credit card for over
$24,000 in personal expenses.
Suggs, 55, surrendered to the Leon County Jail and was released after posting a $13,500 bond. She is accused of
grand theft and scheming to defraud, both felonies. Additionally, she faces four misdemeanor counts for allegedly
submitting false claims on travel vouchers.
The FDLE investigation indicated that Suggs made unauthorized wire transfers, cash withdrawals, and personal
purchases at casinos during business trips. An audit initiated in November 2024 by the Florida Department of
Commerce’s Inspector General triggered the probe into Suggs’s business credit card transactions and travel
reimbursements.
According to the FDLE, suggs allegedly falsified travel vouchers, misclassifying personal expenses as business
meals. When questioned, Suggs claimed some charges were legitimate, while others were mistakenly charged to the
corporate card. Authorities noted that Suggs did not fully reimburse the Florida Sports Foundation for the
unauthorized expenditures.
“While the matter is unrelated to her duties as an employee at FAMU, we are monitoring the situation and will
respond in the future as appropriate,” FAMU interim president Timothy Beard said in a statement to the Associated
Press.
Prior to the arrest, Suggs made headlines in April for hiring Charlie Ward, the 1993 Heisman Trophy winner and
former NBA player, as FAMU’s new men’s basketball coach. Ward excelled in both football and basketball at Florida
State University.
