Fantasist Festival Scam: Music Stars Left Empty-Handed
Monmouth Rising Festival Founder’s Past Fraud Conviction and Unpaid Debts Emerge Amidst Project Collapse

Monmouth’s enterprising “Monmouth Rising” festival, envisioned as a multi-million-pound event, has dramatically collapsed, leaving a trail of unanswered questions and financial distress for those involved. At the heart of the controversy is the festival’s founder, James Kenny, whose history of fraud convictions and significant unpaid debts has now come to light, casting a shadow over the project’s legitimacy and its founder’s credibility.
A Festival Built on Shaky Foundations
Kenny had claimed to have spent a full year solely focused on the “Monmouth Rising” festival, a project he described as his sole motivation to create something meaningful, even at a significant personal cost to his health and finances. He stated that the festival’s downfall was due to the realization that he wouldn’t be able to secure permission for an event of its scale at the Monmouth Showground.
Though, Monmouthshire council has contradicted this narrative, revealing that during the 12 months Kenny claimed to be planning the festival, he only had one meeting with them. This discrepancy raises serious concerns about the extent of genuine planning and the transparency of the project’s progression.
Kenny did acknowledge paying some employees and invited those who lost money to contact him directly, asserting he has “never hidden away from anything.” He declined to disclose his current living situation or answer questions regarding alleged forgeries and the investors he claimed to have, rather requesting that questions be emailed. While he did not provide detailed responses to these inquiries, he issued a statement reiterating his sole motivation was to create something meaningful and that the endeavor came at a personal cost. He also expressed deep repentance, promising those affected, “I will repay you.”
A Pattern of Financial Mismanagement and Deception
Further investigation into james Kenny’s background has revealed a concerning pattern of financial instability and past fraudulent activity. He is identified as a director of numerous small companies under various iterations of his name, with a history of leaving behind approximately £27,000 in unpaid county Court Judgements (CCJs).
More alarmingly, in 2008, Kenny was convicted of two counts of fraud. The charges stemmed from him forging his wife’s signature to secure a mortgage payment, which was used to clear £15,000 worth of his debts. This past conviction raises significant questions about his suitability to lead a large-scale public event and manage considerable financial commitments.
Doubts About the Festival’s Viability
Many individuals who interacted with Kenny and the “Monmouth Rising” project have expressed deep skepticism about its potential success from the outset. Genevieve, who is still owed £5,000 and has recently secured new employment, described Kenny as “a fantasist and a narcissist.” She highlighted the stark contrast between his grand vision of a “multi-million-pound event” and the reality of his operational base: “he set up his office at his mother’s kitchen table.”
The sentiment among those interviewed suggests a widespread feeling of being deceived. “He fooled all of us,” Genevieve stated, encapsulating the disappointment and betrayal felt by many who invested their time, money, or belief into the ill-fated festival. The collapse of “Monmouth Rising” has inevitably led to scrutiny regarding how such a project, spearheaded by an individual with a documented history of fraud and financial impropriety, was allowed to progress as far as it did.
