John Malkovich’s Fantastic Four Role Was Cut, But Director matt Shakman calls Him “Brilliant”
The upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Fantastic Four: First Steps, has seen a significant creative decision made behind the scenes, with actor John Malkovich’s role as the Red Ghost reportedly being cut from the final version of the movie. Director Matt Shakman, who previously worked with Malkovich on his directorial debut, Cut Bank (2014), expressed his disappointment over the decision, highlighting the actor’s “brilliant” performance.
John Malkovich’s “Brilliant” Performance as Red Ghost
Despite the unfortunate news of his character’s removal from the theatrical cut, director Matt Shakman was effusive in his praise for John Malkovich’s contribution to Fantastic Four: First Steps. Shakman recalled the veteran actor being “brilliant” in his portrayal of the Red Ghost and “gave it his all.” this has led to speculation that Malkovich’s scenes might be included in future bonus features or extended cuts of the film, allowing audiences to witness his performance.
The Personal Reason Why The Decision Was Particularly Hard For The Fantastic Four Director
The decision to remove Malkovich’s character was particularly challenging for director Matt Shakman due to thier established professional relationship and his personal admiration for the actor. Shakman’s first directorial project, Cut Bank, featured Malkovich, forging a connection that clearly left a lasting impression.
In a recent interview, Shakman elaborated on the emotional impact of this decision: “It was heartbreaking not to include him in the final version of the movie as he’s one of my very favorite humans and one of my biggest inspirations,” he shared. “As a person who walks the line between theater and film and television, there’s no one who is more inspiring than the founder of Steppenwolf Theater Company. What he’s done on stage as an actor and what he’s done as a director in theater as well as in film, and as just a film actor of incredible ability – I was honored he came to play.”
John Malkovich himself had previously spoken about his involvement in the MCU,expressing a positive experience on set. Back in February, before the news of his character’s removal surfaced,Malkovich described his time making Fantastic Four as “fun,” though he found the production environment, with its ”giant screens and 18 epic cranes,” to be “quite odd.” The 71-year-old actor also revealed that Fantastic Four: First Steps marked his first foray into the Marvel franchise, as he had previously declined other opportunities due to not agreeing with the “deals they made” to him.
While it’s a shame that this particular creative choice led to Malkovich’s scenes being cut, there’s always the possibility that his compelling performance as the Red Ghost could find a place in a future installment of the Fantastic Four saga. Fans can catch Fantastic Four: First Steps in theaters starting Friday, July 25.
