Blood tests may also be used to detect serum precipitins, which are antibodies that indicate the body has been sensitized to specific mold antigens.

The primary treatment for farmer’s lung is the total avoidance of the triggering agent. In acute cases, corticosteroids may be prescribed to reduce inflammation and prevent the progression toward fibrosis. Once pulmonary fibrosis has occurred, however, the scarring is generally irreversible, making early detection and prevention the only effective ways to preserve long-term lung function.
