The 2026 Boston Marathon saw a clear dominance of advanced super shoes, with Asics leading the field, Nike’s Alphafly 4 prototype widely used among its athletes, and Sharon Lokedi defending her title in a custom Under Armour Velociti Elite 3.
John Korir won the men’s race in 2:01:52, breaking Geoffrey Mutai’s 15-year-old course record while wearing an Asics MetaSpeed Sky prototype. This marked the second consecutive year Korir has competed in a prototype version of the Metaspeed Sky, following his use of a Metaspeed Sky Tokyo prototype in 2025. The shoe features Asics’ highest-performing FFLeap foam, made of A-TPU, a material noted for its lightweight properties and superior rebound and resilience, which has become common in elite racing footwear.
Asics super shoes were worn by seven of the top 10 finishers in both the men’s and women’s divisions, including the men’s champion. Nike had four athletes wearing its swoosh-branded shoes, with the majority of them using an Alphafly 4 prototype. On the women’s side, Sharon Lokedi successfully defended her title with a time of 2:18:51, repeating her victory in the custom hot pink Under Armour Velociti Elite 3, the same model that propelled her to win in 2025.
The race took place under what were described as absolutely perfect racing conditions, contributing to multiple record-breaking performances. American Jess McClain ran a blistering 2:20:49 to break Shalane Flanagan’s 2014 American record, while Zouhair Talbi set an American record with a time of 2:03:45. These performances occurred alongside the shoe trends that defined the event’s competitive landscape.
The results underscored the ongoing evolution in marathon footwear, where proprietary foams and plate technologies continue to influence outcomes at the highest levels of competition. Asics’ dominance through its MetaSpeed Sky prototype highlighted the brand’s current edge in super shoe development, while the widespread use of Nike’s Alphafly 4 proto among its sponsored athletes indicated sustained reliance on its latest iteration. Lokedi’s repeat victory in the Under Armour Velociti Elite 3 demonstrated the viability of alternative brands in elite marathon racing when paired with athlete-specific customization.
