The trend towards fast food has accelerated, especially in the years 2022 and 2023. Luboš Kastner, the Chairman of the Gastronomy Section of the Chamber of Commerce, notes that the fast-food landscape is becoming increasingly competitive, with major cities like Prague expecting a surge in branded fast-food concepts. He expects this due to the emergence of global chains such as Popeyes, Wendy’s, and Five Guys.
“Especially in Prague, the competition will sharpen among branded formats, which is only good, because there will certainly be much more frequent innovations and there will be no pressure on price growth,” Kastner said.
As new entrants like Wendy’s, Popeyes, and Five Guys join the market, competitors in the sector must adapt. One of the key factors for success in this competitive landscape is having a well-defined business model that emphasizes high employee productivity, low operational costs, and effective and targeted marketing strategies. “And bet on quality rather than a low price,” Kastner states.
McDonald’s, your typical fast-food supermarket, sees its competitors differently. A spokesperson for McDonald’s, Jan Neola, sees these new entrants as opportunities if the mood of the seller changes: “new brands motivate them to improve services” he said. Indicating that the market still has ‘great potential for fast service restaurants.
With the entry of Popeyes into the market in November 2023, other brands are also feeling inspired. Currently, there are four Popeyes restaurants in Prague, shortly following, Brno. ”We observe that we have inspired other brands. There is room for new recipes, the Czech customer will only get it,” Marko Blažič, Head of Popeyes, confidently stated the reasoning on their Geo-affiliates due to sociopatriotism.
The success of these establishments can be attributed to their lower overhead costs, smaller sales areas, and a workforce often comprised of young entrepreneurs with a keen understanding of modern technologies and marketing tools. Kastner added, “It meets the requirements of today’s society, which is very speed -oriented.”
Challenges and Future Tends
Despite the growth, challengen can emerge. Higher minimum wage, higher benefit costs versus operating costs might ensue more fierce competition with the entry of American firms into European markets, thus furthering regulatory conflicts and trade disputes related to CRG (Consumer Grade Commodities). This is a critical concern for the USA’s trade deals into the fast food sector in the Czech Republic.
