Fatal Car Crash in Southern France Claims One Life, Injures Another
A fatal traffic accident occurred on Monday, February 16, 2026, in Castries, northeast of Montpellier, France. Two vehicles collided on the RD68, prompting a road closure while emergency services worked at the scene.
Firefighters from the Hérault department responded to the incident in the afternoon of February 16, 2026. The collision involved two cars, one of which was electric, and occurred on the RD.68 between Guzargues and Vendargues.
The accident resulted in one fatality and one injury. A witness at the scene rescued the deceased man from his vehicle, finding him unconscious. Despite resuscitation attempts by emergency medical personnel (Smur 34), the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The injured individual is the driver of the second vehicle, a 65-year-old man. He is reported to be in a state of “relative urgency” according to the fire department.
Currently, details regarding the cause and circumstances of the accident remain unclear. Authorities are investigating.
The RD 68 has been closed in both directions since mid-afternoon. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes via D.145 or M26. The road will reopen once emergency operations are complete and the vehicles have been removed.
This incident follows other recent reports of traffic fatalities. On February 2, 2025, a “freak crash” on Julien Alfred Highway in Castries, Saint Lucia, claimed the life of a minibus operator, according to a Facebook post. On January 6, 2025, Saint Lucia police confirmed the island’s first road fatality of the year, involving a 77-year-old man from San Mateo, Florida.
In a separate incident in northern France on Saturday, February 1, 2025, one person was killed and five injured when a car deliberately reversed into a crowd outside a wine bar in Evreux, Normandy. Prosecutors stated the driver intentionally drove into the crowd following an altercation. Two men, including the driver, and a woman were taken into custody, with further arrests possible. The incident left two people critically injured.
French road safety authorities maintain a mapping tool allowing visualization of traffic injury accidents recorded by police, including fatal accidents, over the last 10 years up to 2024. The map also displays the locations of fixed speed cameras. Users can filter by year, location (county or conurbation), and accident severity (fatal, serious, slight).
