A deadly fire in a Reims, France, residential tower resulted in the deaths of four people late Thursday. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the blaze. The Marne prefecture confirmed that three adults and one child perished in the incident.
Reims Public Prosecutor François Schneider indicated a “very likely accidental origin” for the fire. Two victims died from asphyxiation on upper floors. The other two victims are “presumably two teenage brothers living in the apartment with their stepfather,” Schneider said. One died from burns, and the other from jumping out of a window. However, Schneider stressed that “absolute certainty on their identity” is still pending. The prefect of the Marne, Henri Prévost, added that a child is “for the moment considered as disappeared.”
“We don’t know if he was present in the apartment or not,” Prévost told AFP, adding that further investigation will determine the child’s whereabouts and fate.
Two adults sustained serious injuries and were transported to a hospital. Twelve others, including children and adults, suffered minor injuries. Reims Mayor Arnaud Robinet reported that firefighters did not find any additional bodies during their search operations.
The fire erupted around 12:30 a.m. on the fourth floor of the public housing building and quickly spread upwards, particularly through the facade. The Red Cross district, located southwest of Reims, was cordoned off, with access to the affected tower restricted.
Forty Victims Supported
The eleven-story building contains four apartments on each floor. Robinet stated that the building was not considered a health hazard and was undergoing a thermal renovation program. A neighboring building experienced a kitchen fire in February, according to Robinet.
Police officers patrolling the area were the first to respond to the fire, evacuating residents from the stairwells “with enormous courage,” Robinet said.
Prefect Prévost described the intervention as “difficult” due to the building’s size and weather conditions. “There was a lot of wind on Reims in the night, and the smoke tended to fall back inward,” complicating the evacuation efforts, he explained.
The prefecture reported that 15 fire and rescue service vehicles and 62 firefighters were deployed, along with 20 national police officers, 20 municipal police officers, and nine paramedics.the Red Cross provided assistance to 40 residents at a gymnasium provided by the municipality.
