Plane Wreckage, Bodies of Missing Pilots Found in Norwegian Lake
BJØRNAFJORDEN, Norway — the wreckage of a small aircraft and the bodies of two missing pilots have been located in Vinddalsvatnet lake after a three-day search, police confirmed Thursday. The plane was found at a depth of approximately 30 meters (98 feet).
Extensive Search Concludes
Authorities launched an extensive search after the aircraft sent out an emergency message Tuesday afternoon. The Armed Forces assisted local police in the operation.
Helicopters, boats, divers, and approximately 60 volunteers participated in the search. Underwater drones equipped with sonar technology were also deployed.
“A possible revelation was reported at five this afternoon. It was confirmed after a short time,” Atle Birkeland, Attest Manager, told NRK.
Birkeland added, “It is good to confirm that what we have thought and meant all the way is right.”
Recovery efforts are scheduled to take place Thursday night.
This is what police say about the found on Thursday night:
the search was complicated by the depth of Vinddalsvatnet and poor visibility caused by the muddy lakebed.
The missing pilots were identified as Tore Iversrud Marthinsen,61,from Ringsaker, and Ivar Harald Henriksen,74,from Bergen. Their families have been notified.
The aircraft was reportedly designed for aerobatics.
