A Father’s Role: Crosswords, Love, and Lasting Legacy

For Sherri McGee McCovey, mornings as a child meant watching her father tackle the Los Angeles Times crossword puzzle. She saw him as the smartest man in the world as he skillfully filled in the blanks. this simple ritual sparked a lifelong interest.
Her father patiently explained the puzzle’s mechanics,guiding her through clues and strategies. Initially frustrated with Highlights Magazine crosswords, she persevered with his encouragement. Eventually,she mastered word searches and crossword books,eager to share her successes with her dad.
McCovey remembers her father’s multifaceted role in her life. A Master sergeant and Air Traffic Controller in the Air Force for 20 years, he later became a salesman, entrepreneur, and real estate investor. He was always present at her recitals, brought her Taco Bell lunches, and treated her to ice cream. He also carefully vetted her future husband.
Losing her father shortly after her wedding in 2005 was devastating. She reflects on the milestones he missed, including his grandson’s birth, baseball championships, graduation, and college acceptance.These achievements, she believes, would have made him proud.

Today, McCovey enjoys online crossword puzzles, a modern twist on her father’s tradition. She completes the New York Times Mini Crossword puzzle, Spelling bee, Wordle, and the Black Crossword Puzzle daily.Now, her 18-year-old son challenges her, bringing the experience full circle.
She believes her father is watching from Heaven,filled with pride.
