Ringwood, Hampshire – A 66-year-old father of five has received a £70,000 settlement from his GP after developing a compulsive gambling addiction he claims was triggered by a medication prescribed for restless leg syndrome (RLS). Philip Stevens, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1995, began experiencing a tremor in his left leg in 2017, leading to sleepless nights. His GP prescribed Ropinirole, a dopamine antagonist medication commonly used to treat RLS.
Stevens, who previously enjoyed occasional, controlled betting at horse races, says his gambling spiraled out of control after starting the medication. He found himself placing bets regularly on his smartphone, even waking up in the middle of the night to gamble.
“Over the four years that philip took Ropinirole, he spent thousands of pounds on online gambling websites,” said a spokeswoman for Leigh Day solicitors, the firm representing Stevens. “His gambling became compulsive, and he was betting on anything he could and stopped caring about winning altogether. He did not feel in control of his actions.”
Stevens’ legal team argued that his GP failed to adequately warn him about the potential side effects of Ropinirole, including impulse control disorder, which can manifest as uncontrollable gambling or shopping.
This case highlights the potential risks associated with certain medications and the importance of informed consent. While ropinirole can be effective in treating RLS,patients should be fully aware of the potential side effects before starting treatment.
