Jakarta,Indonesia – in a significant move to foster stronger family bonds and enhance child development, the Indonesian government has launched a new initiative aimed at increasing the active participation of fathers in thier children’s lives. This program, spearheaded by the Ministry of Population and Family Development, seeks to address a growing concern about the limited involvement of fathers in early childhood care and education.
The Growing Need for Fatherly Presence
Recent data highlights a critical gap in paternal involvement. In 2021, a concerning 20.9% of children reportedly lacked a father figure.Furthermore, Statistics Indonesia revealed that in the same year, only 37.17% of children aged 0-5 years were cared for by both parents. These statistics underscore the urgent need for interventions that encourage fathers to play a more prominent role in their children’s upbringing.
the Indonesian Exemplary Father Movement (GATI)
To counter this trend, the government has introduced the indonesian Exemplary father movement, known locally as Gerakan Ayah Tangguh Indonesia (GATI). this thorough initiative is designed to empower fathers and encourage their active engagement in parenting, notably during the crucial early years of a child’s life.
Strengthening Roles in Care and Education
The core objective of GATI is to bolster the role of fathers in the care and education of children from an early age. The movement emphasizes the profound impact of a father’s presence during key developmental milestones. As stated in Circular Letter Number 7 of 2025 by the Ministry of Population and Family Development,”Through the presence of fathers at these important moments,an emotional closeness is created that positively influences children’s self-confidence,comfort,and readiness to undergo the learning process.”
“Fathers Accompanying Children on the First Day of School”
A flagship component of the GATI initiative is the “Fathers Accompanying Children on the First Day of School” movement. This program officially commenced on July 14, 2025, aligning with the academic year’s start dates for various schools across the nation. This symbolic gesture aims to create lasting memories and reinforce the father-child bond from the very beginning of a child’s educational journey.
A Shift in Parenting Culture
The Minister of Population and Family Development, Wihaji, views this movement as a catalyst for a broader change in indonesian parenting culture. He remarked, “This movement also symbolises the changing culture of parenting in Indonesia. It has shifted from being centred on the mother’s role to being more collaborative and equal.” This sentiment reflects a growing understanding that effective parenting is a shared obligation, benefiting both children and families as a whole.
The Indonesian exemplary Father Movement represents a forward-thinking approach to child welfare, recognizing that a father’s active involvement is indispensable for nurturing well-rounded, confident, and resilient children. By championing this cultural shift, Indonesia is investing in a brighter future for its youngest generation.
