But a groundbreaking new discovery is offering a beacon of hope: an existing, readily available vitamin, B3 (niacin), has demonstrated a remarkable ability to target a key driver of the disease.
Researchers have pinpointed a specific genetic factor, a molecule called microRNA-93 (miR-93), as playing a critical role in the development and progression of MASLD. This tiny RNA molecule,found in liver cells,appears to go into overdrive in those with the condition,disrupting the liver’s ability to process fats effectively. Specifically, elevated miR-93 suppresses the activity of SIRT1, a gene vital for healthy lipid metabolism.
The research, published in the journal Metabolism: Clinical and Experimental, involved refined gene editing studies in mice. Eliminating miR-93 led to a significant reduction in fat buildup in the liver, alongside improvements in insulin sensitivity and overall liver function. Conversely, increasing miR-93 worsened metabolic function.
What’s truly exciting is the potential for a swift path to treatment. After screening 150 FDA-approved drugs, niacin emerged as the most effective suppressor of miR-93.In treated mice, niacin not only lowered miR-93 levels but also boosted SIRT1 activity, effectively restoring the liver’s ability to manage fats. This suggests a pathway to normalizing liver health using a safe and well-understood compound.
