Fayrouz: “Neighbor of the Moon” celebrates its ninetieth birthday
Celebrating Fairuz: The Icon of Arabic Music
On November 21, 2024, Arabic music fans celebrate the ninetieth birthday of Fairuz, a beloved Lebanese singer. Known for her beautiful voice, Fairuz has entertained audiences for decades with songs that resonate with themes of love and romance.
Fairuz, born Nihad Haddad in 1934, grew up in a Christian family in Zukaq al-Blat, Beirut. Her father, Wadih Haddad, worked at a printing press, and her mother, Lisa Boustani, was a Maronite Christian. Fairuz attended St. Joseph’s School for Girls until World War II forced a shift to a public school.
At the age of 14, Fairuz was discovered by Muhammad Flaifel while he was searching for talent for a new choral group. With his encouragement, she studied music for four years. Following her training, she impressed musician Halim Al Roumi, who gave her the stage name Fairuz, meaning “turquoise,” likening her voice to a precious stone.
Fairuz began her career in the Lebanese Radio Band, where she gained popularity. She collaborated with the Rahbani brothers, Asi and Mansoor, creating music that blended Western and Arabic styles. Their tragic love song “Condemnation,” recorded in 1952, marked a pivotal moment in her career.
After marrying Asi Rahbani in 1954, Fairuz’s popularity soared in Cairo, the capital of Arab culture at the time. They welcomed four children, including their son Ziad, who later contributed significantly to her music.
Fairuz’s first major performance came in 1957 at the Baalbek Festival, where she captivated thousands in attendance. Despite the outbreak of civil war in Lebanon in 1975, Fairuz remained a prominent figure and continued to perform for her people.
Her music transcended borders, with fans across Arab countries and the diaspora. Fairuz performed internationally, from New York to Paris, earning numerous accolades, including the Medal of Honor from King Hussein of Jordan.
Fairuz often sang about love, nostalgia, nature, and social themes. Through her career, she delivered many memorable songs and participated in musical dramas. Some famous works include “Bridge of the Moon,” “Baya al-Khawatim,” and “Al-Mahatta.”
In the later years of her career, Fairuz released several albums, collaborating with Ziad Rahbani. Her latest album, “Babali,” came out in 2017 and faced mixed reviews but continued to showcase her enduring talent.
Fairuz consistently remains a symbol of hope and artistic excellence in the Arabic music world, captivating generations with her enchanting songs and powerful presence.
