FBI Raids Home & LAUSD HQ of Superintendent Alberto Carvalho
FBI Raids Home and Office of Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent
Federal agents served search warrants Wednesday morning at the home of Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Alberto Carvalho and at the district’s headquarters in downtown Los Angeles, officials confirmed. The FBI also executed a search warrant at a Florida residence linked to Carvalho, located in Southwest Ranches, a town in Broward County.
The warrants were executed at Carvalho’s home in the San Pedro neighborhood of Los Angeles and at LAUSD headquarters. Images from the scene around 9:10 a.m. Pacific Time showed agents wearing FBI-labeled clothing on the front porch of Carvalho’s home. A neighbor, John Schefer, reported seeing agents at the residence as early as 6 a.m.
The nature of the investigation remains unclear. As of Wednesday morning, the affidavit supporting the search warrants was sealed by the court, and the FBI has not disclosed the specific allegations being examined. Law enforcement sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated the investigation specifically involves Carvalho, and is categorized as a “white collar” case not related to immigration.
LAUSD released a statement confirming “law enforcement activity” at its headquarters and Carvalho’s home. “The District is cooperating with the investigation and we do not have further information at this time,” the statement read.
Employees at LAUSD headquarters reported being asked to leave the building due to the law enforcement activity, but were not provided with details regarding the investigation. The office of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stated that LAUSD is an independent body and the Mayor’s Office has no information about the situation.
Carvalho assumed the role of superintendent in February 2022, succeeding Austin Beutner. Prior to leading LAUSD, he served as the superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools from 2008 until taking the position in Los Angeles.
Recent months have seen Carvalho focus on concerns related to immigration enforcement, following his initial efforts navigating the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic.
LAUSD is the nation’s second-largest school district in terms of student enrollment, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.
The investigation appears to be connected to AllHere, a failed AI company whose founder was charged with fraud in 2024, according to one source with knowledge of the matter. The FBI declined to comment further, citing the sealed affidavit.
