Union Berlin’s Bundesliga Fate Intertwined with Bochum’s Relegation Battle
BERLIN (AP) — The fervent chants of Union Berlin supporters echoed a stark warning last weekend: “Relegation!” Their target? Bochum, embroiled in a desperate fight to remain in the Bundesliga. A recent draw between VfL Bochum and Union Berlin did little to alleviate Bochum’s precarious position, intensifying the pressure as the season nears its end.
Bochum’s failure to secure a victory against Heidenheim further compounds their woes. With only two games remaining, the specter of relegation looms large, possibly sealing their fate after four years in the top flight.
Heidenheim Clash Looms Large
Union Berlin is set to host Heidenheim, a match laden with importance for both clubs. This will be Union’s final home game of the season. Concurrently, Bochum will face mainz 05. The results of these matches could drastically alter the relegation landscape.
Holstein Kiel, also battling to avoid relegation, will be closely monitoring the outcomes. Their match against Freiburg adds another layer of complexity to the relegation scramble. Unlike Bochum, Kiel’s fate remains in their own hands should they secure a victory.
Lingering Resentment Fuels Tension
The animosity between Union Berlin and Bochum stems from an earlier incident this season.During their match on December 14, Bochum’s goalkeeper, Patrick Drewes, was struck by a lighter thrown from the crowd. The incident led to a lengthy delay and ultimately, after legal wrangling, Union Berlin was awarded the victory. The entire process, from the incident to the final judgment, spanned 135 days.
Union’s Unbeaten Streak
Union Berlin, under coach Steffen Baumgart, aims to extend their extraordinary unbeaten run.Their recent form includes draws against Leverkusen and Bochum, alongside high-scoring affairs against Stuttgart and Werder Bremen. The team is currently enjoying an eight-game unbeaten streak, matching a club record from the 2020/21 season.
Home Advantage a Key Factor
Historically, Union Berlin has thrived in their final home games of the season, winning their last seven without exception. However, history also notes that Heidenheim was the last team to defeat Union Berlin in their final home game of the season eight years ago.
