Dr. martin A. Makary,a surgeon-scientist and health policy expert,has been sworn in as the 27th Commissioner of Food and Drugs after a bipartisan Senate vote. He brings extensive experience in research,clinical practice,and health policy to the Food and Drug Governance.
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. welcomed Dr. Makary, emphasizing his qualifications to lead the FDA. Kennedy said Makary’s research and leadership make him uniquely suited to “Make America Healthy Again.”
Makary’s career includes authoring over 300 peer-reviewed articles and founding the Johns Hopkins Center for Surgical Trials and Outcomes Research. His research spans cancer care, obesity, Alzheimer’s, and adverse event monitoring. He also co-developed the Surgery Checklist,now used globally.
the new FDA commissioner is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and has been a visiting professor at over 25 medical schools. He is a graduate of Bucknell University, Thomas Jefferson University, and the Harvard School of Public Health.
Makary completed his residency at Georgetown University and a surgical oncology fellowship at Johns Hopkins. He later became a professor at Johns Hopkins, holding appointments at the School of Public Health and the Carey Business School.
