FDA Considers Ban on Oral Phenylephrine: Effective Alternatives for Congestion Relief

FDA Considers Ban on Oral Phenylephrine: Effective Alternatives for Congestion Relief

November 17, 2024 Catherine Williams Health

Oral Phenylephrine and Congestion Relief: What You Need to Know

Feeling congested? You might be reaching for popular medications like NyQuil, Benadryl, or Sudafed PE. But hold on.

The FDA is considering banning oral phenylephrine, a common ingredient in many cold and allergy medicines. Some pharmacies are already pulling these products from their shelves.

Researchers in Florida have studied oral phenylephrine’s effectiveness for 20 years. They found that it does not relieve nasal congestion better than a placebo. “For 20 years, we have been telling everyone that oral phenylephrine doesn’t work,” said Dr. Randy Hatton from the University of Florida College of Pharmacy. Their findings led them to the FDA, which is now evaluating whether to remove these products from stores.

In the meantime, some major pharmacies like CVS have stopped selling items with oral phenylephrine. Other pharmacies are watching the FDA’s decision.

What to Use Instead for Congestion Relief?

If you suffer from congestion, consider these alternatives:

  1. Nasal Sprays with Phenylephrine: Use them for short periods (3-5 days) to avoid rebound congestion.

  2. Intranasal Steroids: Try Flonase or Nasonex. These help reduce inflammation in the nasal passages.

  3. Saline Irrigation Devices: Use a neti pot with distilled water to clean your sinuses.

  4. Nasal Saline Sprays: Products like Sinex or Simply Saline can help irrigation.

  5. Pseudoephedrine: This ingredient in Sudafed can be effective but is available behind the pharmacy counter.

  6. Oral Antihistamines: Zyrtec, Allegra, and Claritin can relieve allergy-related congestion.

Non-Medication Options:

You might also try non-medication options, such as:

  • Spicy foods: They can help drain mucus.
  • Steam: A hot shower or warm compress over your nose may provide relief.
  • Humidifiers: These can add moisture to the air and soothe nasal passages.

If you have questions, ask your pharmacist about effective medications for congestion.
