Kampala, Uganda – The forum for Democratic Change (FDC), uganda’s oldest opposition party, has officially endorsed Hon. Nathan Nandala Mafabi as its presidential candidate for the upcoming 2026 general elections. This significant move marks a pivotal strategic shift within the party, aiming to consolidate its base and present a united front against the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
Amuriat Steps Aside, Throws Weight Behind Mafabi
The endorsement follows the unexpected withdrawal of FDC President Patrick Oboi Amuriat from the presidential race. Amuriat publicly declared his full support for Mafabi’s candidacy, a decision hailed by party insiders as a crucial step towards healing internal divisions and revitalizing the FDC’s political machinery. This internal consensus was forged through weeks of intensive consultations, engaging grassroots supporters and party stalwarts across the country.
“The FDC is rising onc again with a renewed spirit of purpose,” stated Amuriat during a National Executive Committee meeting at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi. “After engaging with our grassroots supporters and reflecting on the path forward, I am confident that Nandala Mafabi is the leader who will carry the hopes of millions of Ugandans seeking change.”
Mafabi: A Seasoned Parliamentarian and Advocate for Accountability
Nathan Nandala Mafabi,the current Member of Parliament for Budadiri West,brings a wealth of experience to the presidential race. He has held significant leadership positions within the FDC, including serving as Secretary General. Renowned for his outspoken advocacy on critical issues such as governance, public accountability, and fiscal transparency, Mafabi is also a chartered accountant by profession and a seasoned parliamentarian with a demonstrable track record.
Party sources indicate that Mafabi’s endorsement was the result of extensive negotiations aimed at consolidating support and streamlining the FDC’s campaign strategy.
