Fe y Alegría, the International movement of Popular education, marked its 70th anniversary and 35 years of impact in the Dominican Republic with a public event reaffirming its commitment too quality education for vulnerable communities. The organization continues to advance its vision by expanding its reach, strengthening teacher training, and solidifying its global impact on popular education.
The event convened national and local government officials, educators, representatives from international organizations, strategic partners from the private sector, members of the global Fe y alegría network, and civil society representatives. Discussions centered on ensuring the right to education and bolstering public policies that promote inclusive, quality education for all.

Father Dani Villanueva, a Jesuit priest and the general coordinator of Fe y Alegría International, emphasized the significance of the anniversary as an chance to highlight achievements and plan for the future.
This is a time of party, but also of renewed commitment. We will continue working so that more girls, boys, youth and adults access an education that transforms their lives and communities.
father José Ramón López, a Jesuit priest and the National Director of Fe y Alegría Dominican Republic, noted that the organizationS mission in the country focuses on providing free, quality education to children and young people from marginalized urban and rural areas. This contributes to the social and human development of impoverished communities. He added that innovative programs have been implemented over the years, serving as educational management and training models aimed at transforming the lives of individuals and communities.
The event featured discussions on the challenges of education in countries where Fe y Alegría operates, highlighting the organization’s history and future goals. Innovative educational experiences and projects were presented, and key figures in Fe y Alegría‘s history were honored. Young people also spoke, advocating for the right to education.


Young performers from the folk ballet and the Fe y Alegría orchestra showcased the role of education in fostering cultural expression and holistic youth development. Through music and dance, students demonstrated the impact of the movement on their lives and communities, celebrating Dominican identity and the importance of art in education.
The anniversary event, held on Thursday, March 20, at the Barceló Santo Domingo Hotel, included prominent figures such as Luis Miguel de Camps, the incoming Minister of Education of the Dominican Republic; Jatnna Tavarez; Father Martin Lenk SJ, provincial of the Society of Jesus for the Caribbean; and Father Rafael Garrido SJ, president of the CPAL.
