Updated May 25, 2025
Feargal Sharkey, the former lead singer of the Undertones and current environmental campaigner, revealed he was diagnosed with prostate cancer after a routine doctor’s visit for a sore throat. Sharkey, 65, is now urging men to get tested for the disease.
Speaking to the Daily Express, Sharkey explained that his general practitioner ran a “full battery of tests” during what he thought was a simple check-up. The tests revealed the prostate cancer, which Sharkey said has since been “resolved.” He emphasized the importance of early detection, stating that the outcome could have been “very different” had the cancer not been caught during that visit.
Sharkey’s advocacy comes as prostate cancer has become the most commonly diagnosed cancer in England, surpassing breast cancer for the past two years. In 2023, there were 55,033 prostate cancer diagnoses. He also expressed admiration for Chris Hoy, the Olympic gold medalist who disclosed his stage 4 cancer diagnosis in October.
“The reason I’m very happy to talk about it is indeed as if there’s one man out there over the age of 45 go and see your GP. go and get the blood test done,” Feargal Sharkey, Musician and Campaigner said.
