Singapore COE Prices Dip in February, Signaling Market Adjustment
Singapore’s first Certificate of Entitlement (COE) bidding exercise of February closed with premiums falling across all categories, suggesting a recalibration of the market following the New Year momentum seen in January. The decline, observed across car, commercial vehicle, motorcycle, and open categories, indicates a potential shift in buyer and seller strategies.
Category A COE, for vehicles with engine capacities up to 1,600cc and power outputs of no more than 130bhp, or electric vehicles with up to 110kW, closed at $106,320. This represents a decrease of $3,181, or 2.9%, compared to the previous bidding exercise. A total of 1,982 bids were received for 1,265 COEs in this category.
The more powerful Category B, for cars exceeding 1,600cc or 130bhp, and electric vehicles with more than 110kW, experienced the most significant drop, falling by $10,744, or 8.8%, to $110,890. This category saw 966 bids competing for 813 COEs.
Commercial vehicle (Category C) premiums also decreased, settling at $74,801, down $401 from the previous round. 420 bids were submitted for 292 COEs. Motorcycle (Category D) COEs saw a reduction of $571, closing at $8,289, with 645 bids for 550 COEs.
Finally, the open category (Category E), which allows for any vehicle except motorcycles, closed at $116,000, a decrease of $4,891. This category received 462 bids for 271 COEs.
Industry Reactions to the Dip
Industry insiders offered varied perspectives on the implications of the lower COE prices. Nicholas Wong, Chief Executive of Kah Motor Honda, suggested that the current market conditions present a favorable opportunity for buyers, particularly with potential for further savings as Chinese New Year approaches. He stated, “One thing is for sure – after today’s COE drop is the best time to buy a car, with the short buying weeks ahead for CNY shoppers to look for more rebate savings if prices drop further.”
Anthony Teo, Managing Director of BYD/DENZA distributor Vantage Automotive, anticipates continued stability or a slight increase in Category A premiums, while predicting limited further declines in Category B. He commented, “With the reduction in COE premiums, people may start to visit showrooms again. For Cat A, likely it will stay put or go up slightly. For Cat B, likely it will not drop further.”
Vincent Ng, a consultant to Vincar Group, highlighted the attractiveness of the current market for sellers, posing the question, “Can you resist buying a Cat B car?”
COE Premiums and PQP
The Premium Applicable Quotient (PQP) also saw adjustments. For Category A, the PQP for February is $107,571, compared to $114,004 in January. Category B’s PQP is $120,772 for February, down from $126,131 in January. Category C’s PQP is $76,100, a slight decrease from January’s $76,166. Category D’s PQP is $8,542, down from $8,817.
