Feed a Senior Campaign Supports Hampshire County Nutrition Program
Hampshire County Seeks Support to Feed Seniors in Need
Hampshire County, WV – The Hampshire County Committee on Aging (HCCOA) is launching a critical fundraising campaign to ensure seniors in the county have access to nutritious meals. The “feed a Senior” initiative aims to bridge the funding gap for the HCCOA’s vital nutrition program, which is facing increasing demand.
“Feed a Senior is an awareness campaign we are hoping the community will get involved with to help us help the senior citizens in Hampshire County,” said Dana Hott, Director of the Committee on Aging. ”As a non-profit, we rely heavily on donations and fundraising to help offset cost deficits. While we offer many services like In-Home Care and Transportation Assistance, the Nutrition Program’s needs are greatest right now and what our agency chose to focus on for this campaign.”
The program delivers hot and cold meals five days a week to seniors across the county, providing not only nourishment but also crucial social interaction.
“Our goal is to reduce hunger and food insecurity, promote the health and well-being of older individuals (age 60+), and provide a group setting for some much needed socialization,” Hott explained.
demand for the program has surged recently, exceeding the HCCOA’s capacity. A waiting list has formed, leaving some seniors without access to this essential service.
“Sometimes their need is temporary, like meals delivered after an accident or surgery, but we do have participants that have been on the nutrition program for a long time. As long as the need is still there, we will be too,” said Hott.
Funding for the program comes partially from the Older Americans Act and the state of West Virginia, but reimbursements don’t fully cover the cost of producing and delivering the meals.
“We encourage participants to provide a donation for the cost of their meal if able — the suggestion is $8 — but seniors are still able to utilize the service if they opt out of the donation,” Hott noted.
The HCCOA also relies on the generosity of the community. Springfield Treasures, HCCOA’s second-hand store, donates all its proceeds to the nutrition program.”We want to thank those individuals who recently donated to this event for their generosity, and acknowledge others that have done so for many years. Several local churches give donations on a regular basis. Helping Hands has been a huge contributor to the nutrition program,” said Hott.
The “Feed a Senior” campaign is a crucial lifeline for Hampshire County’s seniors. The HCCOA urges community members to consider donating to ensure that no senior goes hungry.
