French Woman’s Courage Sparks Outrage, Solidarity at Madrid Protest
Madrid, Spain - Over 100 feminist protesters gathered outside the French Embassy in Madrid Thursday evening, expressing outrage and solidarity with Gisèle Pelicot, the French woman who endured a decade of horrific abuse orchestrated by her husband. The exhibition came on the same day a court in Avignon sentenced Dominique Pelicot to the maximum penalty of 20 years in prison for drugging and raping his wife with the help of dozens of men.
The protesters, who assembled at 7 p.m. on Salustiano Olózaga Street, demanded increased protection for women. They read aloud the powerful manifesto,”Que la vergüenza cambie de bando” (“Let shame change sides”),a phrase gisèle Pelicot uttered at the start of the trial against the 52 men identified out of nearly 100 involved in the assaults.
“We want to express that we are with you, Gisèle. Thank you for your bravery. shame is changing sides,” the protesters declared in both French and Spanish, their voices echoing through the streets.
Adding a chilling visual representation to the protest,a group of attendees carried nearly 100 life-sized cardboard figures, each bearing Gisèle Pelicot’s face, symbolizing the countless men who participated in her abuse.
Justice Served,But Scars Remain
Dominique Pelicot was found guilty of aggravated rape for drugging his wife and filming his daughter and stepdaughters without their consent. His name will be added to France’s sex offender registry.
The court also ruled that the remaining 50 defendants are guilty of rape or attempted rape.
Gisèle Pelicot expressed respect for the court’s decision, stating that she fought this ”battle” for her “children and grandchildren.”
Justice Served, but Scars remain: Expert Weighs in on Madrid Protest
Madrid, Spain – in a powerful display of solidarity, over 100 feminists gathered outside the French Embassy in Madrid following the landmark sentencing of Dominique Pelicot. We spoke with Dr. Maria Rodriguez, a sociologist specializing in gender-based violence, about the importance of this protest and its implications.
ND3: Dr. Rodriguez, this protest follows a grueling trial which exposed horrific abuse. what message do you think these protesters are hoping to send?
Dr.Rodriguez: This protest is a resounding call for change. It’s a direct response to the systemic failings that allowed Gisèle Pelicot’s abuse to continue for so long. These women are demanding increased protection for survivors and a shift in societal attitudes towards violence against women. The phrase “let shame change sides” is a powerful indictment of the culture that frequently enough blames victims rather of perpetrators.
ND3: The protesters symbolically represented the dozens of men involved in Pelicot’s abuse. How impactful is this visual depiction?
Dr.Rodriguez: it’s incredibly powerful. By physically representing the sheer number of perpetrators involved, it brings home the magnitude of this crime and dismantles the myth that these cases are isolated incidents. It forces us to confront the reality of complicity and the normalization of violence against women.
ND3: What do you think the verdict means for future cases of sexual violence?
Dr. Rodriguez: This verdict sends a strong message: perpetrators, nonetheless of their number or social standing, will be held accountable. But the fight is far from over. We need continued pressure for legal reforms, improved support services for survivors, and a basic shift in societal attitudes that perpetuate violence against women.
