Fengal Cyclone Alert: Landfall Near Puducherry Today with 90 km/h Winds

Cyclone Fengal is expected to make landfall on November 30, near Puducherry. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reports wind speeds could reach up to 90 km/h.

The storm originated from a deep depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal. It intensified into a cyclonic storm, moving northwest towards the northern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts.

Landfall and Weather Alerts

  • IMD predicts the storm will hit between Karaikal and Mamallapuram. Wind speeds will range from 70 to 80 km/h, with gusts reaching 90 km/h during landfall in the afternoon.
  • A red alert has been issued for Chennai, Thiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Villuppuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore districts, and Puducherry due to expected heavy rain.

Impact on Flights and Travel

  • Thirteen flights in and out of Chennai were canceled due to the storm.
  • Public transport on the East Coast Road and Old Mahabalipuram Road will be temporarily suspended during the storm.

School Closures

  • All schools and colleges in Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, and Chengalpattu districts will remain closed on November 30. No special classes or exams will occur during this time.

Preparations and Relief Efforts

  • The Tamil Nadu government set up 2,229 relief centers for affected individuals. Currently, 471 people are sheltered in six relief centers in Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam.
  • Fishermen have been advised to stay ashore. Over 4,000 boats have returned to safety.

  • Rainfall is anticipated in interior Tamil Nadu on December 1, with further heavy rainfall on December 2 and 3.

  • The Indian Navy has mobilized resources for disaster response, focusing on humanitarian aid and rescue operations. Relief supplies are in transit to vulnerable areas.
