Budapest’s 13th district is moving forward with a comprehensive series of memorials to honor the legacy of singer-songwriter Fenyő Miklós, who , at the age of 78. The plans, announced by district mayor Dr. Tóth József, include a memorial plaque, a “musical bench,” the potential naming of a street in his honor, and the creation of a life-size statue.
The initiatives aim to preserve the memory of the influential musician and strengthen the cultural identity of the district, where Fenyő Miklós was born in . He attended the Kárpát utcai óvoda (kindergarten) and the Pannónia utcai általános iskola (elementary school), formative experiences that later informed his music. Mayor Tóth József emphasized that all memorial events will be coordinated with the artist’s family, ensuring their full agreement throughout the process.
A Multi-Faceted Tribute
The district plans to unveil the emléktábla (memorial plaque) at Fenyő Miklós’s former residence on this year. Perhaps the most prominent tribute will be the life-size statue, slated for unveiling in the spring of , coinciding with the 80th anniversary of his birth. Beyond the statue and plaque, the district is exploring the creation of a unique public space within Szent István park, potentially including a bench with musical elements designed to evoke his work.
The district is also investigating the possibility of naming a section of Szent István park – the stretch between Pozsonyi út and Hollán Ernő utca – after Fenyő Miklós. While Budapest regulations typically require a 25-year waiting period after an individual’s death before a public space can be named in their honor, the district is exploring options for a regulatory exception or a special consideration, given Fenyő Miklós’s deep connection to the area.
“Ambassador of Angyalföld”
Mayor Tóth József described Fenyő Miklós as “Angyalföld’s ambassador,” noting that while the artist lived in Újlipótváros, his songs frequently referenced and captured the atmosphere of Angyalföld. The artist’s lyrics often reflected his childhood surroundings, including Szent István park and the “Pálmafák” (Palm Trees) of Angyalföld, as evidenced in songs like “Az Angyalok földjén” (Land of Angels).
Fenyő Miklós was already a díszpolgára (honorary citizen) of the 13th district, and the district council considers him “one of their own.” Dr. Tóth József has also initiated a request to the mayor of Budapest to posthumously award Fenyő Miklós the title of Budapest díszpolgára (honorary citizen of Budapest), a decision that will be made by the Fővárosi Közgyűlés (Budapest General Assembly).
Early Life and Musical Roots
Fenyő Miklós’s early musical career began with the band Sztár, followed by the formation of Syconor in with friends from around Szent István park. The band frequently performed at the Bosch Klub, located at the corner of Balzac utca and Váci út. His music resonated deeply with the local community, and the planned memorials reflect a desire to honor that connection.
The district’s commitment to preserving Fenyő Miklós’s legacy extends beyond physical memorials. Plans include film screenings and the potential display of relics associated with the artist. The initiatives represent a broad effort to honor a defining figure in Hungarian popular music and reinforce the cultural identity of the 13th district.
A 2013 archival recording of Fenyő Miklós discussing his childhood and the changes in the Szent István park area was featured in a TV13 broadcast announcing the memorial plans, further highlighting the artist’s deep roots in the district.
