The Las Vegas Raiders have selected Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, marking the franchise’s first top selection since 2011 and ushering in a new era for a team seeking stability at the quarterback position.

The selection, made on Thursday night in Pittsburgh, confirms months of speculation that Mendoza would be the first player taken in the draft following a historic collegiate career at Indiana. The Raiders officially announced the pick through their official website, noting that Mendoza delivered a record-breaking season for the Hoosiers in 2025, leading them to their first Big Ten Championship since 1967 and the program’s first-ever College Football Playoff National Championship.

Mendoza completed 72 percent of his passes for 3,535 yards and 41 touchdowns during the 2025 season, ranking third nationally in completion rate and leading the FBS in passing touchdowns. His performance in the College Football Playoff included an 8:0 touchdown-to-interception ratio, further underscoring his poise under pressure. The quarterback’s individual accolades from the season include the Heisman Trophy, Walter Camp Award, Maxwell Award, Davey O’Brien Award, and recognition as a consensus first-team All-American and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year.

Before his tenure at Indiana, Mendoza appeared in 20 games for the California Golden Bears, where he completed 66.5 percent of his passes for 4,712 yards and 30 touchdowns. His selection makes him the fifth Heisman Trophy winner drafted by the Raiders franchise, joining Marcus Allen (1982), Bo Jackson (1987), Tim Brown (1988), and Charles Woodson (1998).

The pick arrives during a period of transition for the Raiders, who have not made the playoffs since the 2002 season and have cycled through seven different starting quarterbacks over the past three years. Following the departure of Derek Carr, the team posted a 15-36 record from 2023 to 2025, highlighting the urgency for a long-term solution at the position.

Head coach Klint Kubiak, who was hired prior to the 2025 season, has emphasized a patient approach to Mendoza’s development, stating publicly that he does not intend to start the rookie in Week 1 unless the circumstances are ideal. Kubiak’s offensive scheme, which emphasizes timing, accuracy, and progression reads, is viewed as a strong fit for Mendoza’s skill set, particularly his anticipation and decision-making in structured dropbacks.

Although Mendoza did not attend the draft ceremony in person, his selection was widely anticipated by analysts and insiders who had rated him as the consensus top prospect for months. His absence was attributed to a prior commitment to celebrate with family, a decision that drew attention but did not diminish the significance of the moment for the Raiders organization.

With the No. 1 overall selection, the Raiders have placed their immediate hopes on Mendoza to end a prolonged period of inconsistency and reestablish the franchise as a contender in the AFC West. The move also signals a commitment to building through the draft, as Las Vegas looks to supplement its young quarterback with additional talent in the coming rounds.
