William O’Donoghue, a celebrated hurler from Limerick, recently proposed to his girlfriend, Gemma Cowen, while decorating their Christmas tree. The couple has been in a relationship for several years and now share a home.
Gemma, the daughter of MEP Barry Cowen and niece of former Taoiseach Brian Cowen, announced the engagement on her Instagram. She expressed her surprise at William’s urgency in putting up their tree in mid-November, captioning her post with a white heart and a ring emoji, along with “To Forever”.
The proposal video shows the couple decorating their tree before William asks Gemma to turn around. Upon doing so, she sees him on one knee with an engagement ring. Following the heartfelt moment, he lifts her into the air for a joyful embrace.
Both William and Gemma hold academic qualifications; William has a Master’s in Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology, while Gemma specializes in Fine Art. Gemma studied at Limerick School of Art and Design before returning to her creative pursuits after a few years in the corporate world.
Well-wishes poured in from friends and family, including from the wives and girlfriends of Limerick hurlers. Elaine Kennedy congratulated them with “Oh my god, huge congrats guys,” while Louise Cantillon wrote, “Ahh, comhghairdeas lovers x”.
