FIA Restructures Sustainability Role Amid Leadership changes

Updated June 20, 2025

The Federation Internationale⁢ de l’Automobile ⁣(FIA) ⁣is undergoing changes in its ⁢leadership and organizational structure, including a restructuring of its sustainability⁢ role. This shift comes after a review period, according to an FIA statement.

The sustainability role, ⁣which Mariani assumed in December 2023 after an eight-month recruitment, ⁤has been eliminated. The‍ FIA said the ‍decision followed a review period.

The FIA is divided⁢ into two⁢ main areas: mobility, focusing on road transport, and motorsport. The restructuring moves sustainability under the ⁣umbrella of mobility.

FIA’s Villareal said connecting with members on lasting fuel, smart cities, and diversity in sport ‍will achieve a bigger impact. The‍ statement did not detail‍ how moving sustainability efforts to mobility would accomplish this.

These changes occur‍ amid a series of departures and shifts within the FIA under‍ the presidency of mohammed Ben sulayem, who ⁣is seeking re-election. Robert Reid, the deputy president for sport, resigned in April. ⁣Other key figures who have left include Paolo Basarri, head of compliance; Bertrand Badre, head of the audit committee; Natalie Robyn, chief executive officer; and Niels Wittich, F1 race⁢ director.

The changes to the FIA statutes introduced by Sulayem have⁤ faced criticism for allegedly reducing ⁣accountability⁤ and enhancing⁣ the president’s authority.‍ One opponent described the changes ⁤as a “dark period ⁢of democratic backsliding.”

Malhame said the FIA is⁤ committed to advancing opportunities for women within the association, mobility and motorsport. Malhame added that 32% of the FIA workforce are women.

A spokesperson noted that nearly half (47%) of the almost 100 women at the FIA hold senior‍ positions.‍ Emilia Abel‍ runs ⁣global road sport, and Rebecca Lee is head of single-seater operations and the FIA’s ⁣first female official ⁤F1 starter.

What’s next

The FIA will likely face scrutiny regarding its commitment ⁣to sustainability and diversity as it‍ implements these structural changes and as⁤ Sulayem seeks re-election.
