Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has issued a stark warning about the potential consequences of failing to reach an agreement on the 2026 budget, while concurrently detailing plans for energy price compensation and commenting on the ongoing war in Ukraine. the Prime Minister emphasized the challenging negotiations ahead, particularly concerning necessary savings and differing political viewpoints within the governing coalition.
Budget Impasse and Political Risks
Fico stated that cancelling the ambulance tender is proving to be a time-consuming process, impacting the timeline for finalizing the 2026 budget. He painted a grim picture of the choice, suggesting a failure to reach consensus could pave the way for a government he characterized as a “league of obedient servants” who would compromise Slovakia‘s social system.”We will either agree, or we will create a chance for the government of the league of obedient servants who will discuss Slovakia and its social system for screws,” Fico declared, highlighting the high stakes involved in the budget negotiations. He acknowledged the agreement will be demanding, requiring significant savings and navigating the diverse political perspectives within the coalition.
Energy Relief for Slovak Households
Addressing concerns about rising energy costs, Fico announced a forthcoming proposal to compensate 90% of Slovak households for gas and heat price increases. This plan follows discussions with Finance Minister Ladislav kamenický and Deputy Prime Minister/Minister of Economy denisa Sakova.
Regarding electricity prices, Fico pointed to a signed memorandum with Slovak power plants guaranteeing current prices through 2026. He expressed confidence that the vast majority of Slovak households continue to require assistance with energy expenditures.
“As far as energy is concerned… We will submit a proposal to compensate for gas and heat prices for 90 percent of households. In the case of electricity, the same prices in 2026 guarantee the signed memorandum with Slovak power plants,” Fico explained.
Defense Spending and Infrastructure Projects
While emphasizing the need to control overall expenditure, Fico indicated a willingness to increase funding for projects managed by the Ministry of Defense. This includes investments in crucial infrastructure like hospitals and other essential projects. The Prime Minister stressed that expenditures on armor will not increase.
Concerns Over Ukraine War and Potential Ceasefire
Fico also weighed in on the anticipated meeting between American and Russian presidents regarding the war in Ukraine. He expressed pessimism about the upcoming developments, stating, “what happens in the coming weeks will not be nice.”
He identified two key priorities: an immediate cessation of military operations and the prevention of external interference in any potential ceasefire agreement. Fico believes it’s crucial that “other Western players do not fit a possible ceasefire agreement,” suggesting a desire for a resolution driven primarily by the involved parties.
