Field Of Gold is expected to make his four-year-old seasonal return in the bet365 Mile at Sandown later in April 2026. The son of Kingman, trained by John and Thady Gosden, is targeting the Esher event after a winter period in which he has reportedly thrived.
The colt was a prominent figure in last year’s Classic generation. He secured a victory in the Irish 2000 Guineas, avenging a narrow defeat in the English 2000 Guineas, before winning the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Recovery and Training Progress
Following his success at Royal Ascot, Field Of Gold encountered difficulties during the remainder of his three-year-old campaign. He finished lame after being beaten at long odds-on in the Sussex Stakes.
He later appeared in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on British Champions Day, where he finished fifth. Reports indicated that he may have lacked a recent run heading into that season-ending event.
Despite these setbacks, owners Juddmonte decided to keep the miler in training. Barry Mahon, the European racing manager for the owners, stated that the horse has strengthened during the transition from three to four years old.

It’s very possible he goes to Sandown and he’s training towards there,We’re going to have a discussion, myself, John and Thady and owners later this week just to confirm that but if John and Thady are happy with his fitness levels then that is where he will start.
Mahon also noted that jockey Colin Keane expressed satisfaction after riding the colt recently. The training team is aiming for a clean run to allow the horse to continue his progression.
Sandown Context and History
The bet365 Mile at Sandown is a race the Clarehaven training team has previous success with, having won the event with Palace Pier in 2021.
While Field Of Gold targets the mile event, Sandown also hosts the Bet365 Gold Cup, a Grade 3 Premier Handicap National Hunt steeplechase. This separate event is open to horses aged five years and older and covers a distance of 3m 4½f.
The National Hunt race has a long history at the venue, dating back to 1957. Recent winners of the steeplechase include Resplendent Grey in 2025 and Minella Cocooner in 2024.
Outlook for the Season
The return of Field Of Gold is highly anticipated due to his previous top-class performances. The team’s primary goal is to ensure his fitness levels are sufficient before confirming the start in the bet365 Mile.
If the horse maintains his current trajectory and recovers the form shown at Royal Ascot, he remains a significant contender in the miler category for the 2026 season.
